School Counseling at RMCS

Picture
School Counselors are available to all students in a variety of ways.  At RMCS, Ms. Laura and Mrs. Rice work with students, parents and teachers regularly to support the social, emotional and academic needs of every child.  Below are some of the specific ways we are available to students.

Whole Group Work

Every student at RMCS is given the opportunity to work with the school counselors within the classrooms.  Classroom lessons are taught regularly on topics such as self-regulation, problem solving, bully prevention/friendship, personal safety, empathy building, as well as topics that become relevant to specific grade levels.

Small Group and Lunch Bunch

Small counseling groups are designed to support students on topics such as friendship, stress management, changing families, etc.  Children are selected for these groups based on input from parents and teachers.
Lunch Bunch groups occur for all students in grades 1-5 at RMCS throughout the school year.  These less formal groups provide children the chance to eat in a quiet space while enjoying the company of a few others and playing a game.  One of the most common questions we hear from RMCS students is "when will my lunch bunch be??"  It is also a highlight in our day!

Individual Student Support

School counselors are available to support individual students in many different ways.  We can provide short term, solution focused counseling for students within the school day and make referrals to outside counselors when appropriate.
We problem solve with students and practice the skills that are taught in our whole group lessons when conflicts arise.
We also provide individual support by being a part of various teams that advocate for the needs of students.
